Forbidden Love at a University

Megan at U.N.C. pretty well knew the unwritten rules: grad students should not date profs, or vice-versa; and in no circumstances should they date undergraduates, especially those not quite adults in age or conduct.  After all, getting arrested for doing drugs or helping your b.f. steal a highway sign is not a viable career move!  But is there wiggle room in these unwritten rules?

This was Megan's dilemma.  She was a thoroughly modern English graduate student, specializing in Restoration literature.  And she had standards!  After all, Engineering grad students were suspect and poorly togged out; plus some of them followed the gross practice of wearing pocket protectors.  Med students were engrossed in reciting facts, plus they liked to play doctor!  No, to be safe, she looked only for liberal arts graduate students. Except art majors, to be sure.

She was delighted to meet a really nice looking, well-spoken sexy guy named Brad at a club on the Outer Banks; and even more delighted to find that he was a grad student in Romantic Poetry.  Now the English Department was not overly large, so she wondered why they had never met earlier on campus.

It took some time for them to realize why.  Maybe the truth dawned on her when she saw the N.C. State sticker on the back of Brad's Toyota!  Oh snap!  She had been unwittingly consorting with a Wolfpack fan!  Is this even legal?  I must admit that Megan had one un-English major-like quirk: she followed Tarheel sports!  Yes, even though she never came out of the armoire with her fan status within the Department.

Megan thought, "This is so like Romeo and Juliet that my Real Life is guilty of plagiarism!  But their version had no Mercutio to add poignant comic relief to the story with an exit line containing an awful pun!*

Well, you have to admit some impediments to the marriage of true minds.  At least he didn't go to Duke!

*["Ask for me to-morrow, and you shall find me a grave man."]

Is this too shamelessly romantic?

That's one nice thing about t-shirts. Even if you wanted to use a pocket protector you can't.

Pocket protectors are truly gauche, but at least we don't have to deal any more with the slide-rule holsters that were almost mandatory fashion accessories for engineers when I went to school.
